The Holidays are upon us and Christmas is near but that doesn't mean that our fantasy teams don't deserve our undivided attention. It's time we gave our squads some gifts off the waiver wire that will help us win that fantasy title. Let's see who caught my eye this week!
Point Guard
Isaiah Thomas (PG) Yahoo Ownership 46%
Fitting that we would start our Christmas Special with the biblical name Isaiah. Unfortunately for most owners Isaiah Thomas did not start the year as most people (including I) had planned. But his early season woes can not be placed on him, but rather the ineptitude and incompetence of Keith Smart, Sacramento's head coach. The Kings are 9-18 and a large part of the blame can be put on Smart for removing Thomas from the starting lineup in favor off journeyman PG Aaron Brooks. Brooks, unlike Isaiah is a horrendous defender and is consistently lit up by the bigger bodied point guards. Thomas on the other hand, showed us last year what he was capable of doing when he received starting minutes. In 37 starts last year Thomas put up top 80 fantasy numbers, averaging 14.8 ppg, 5.4 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.6 3PT, while shooting 47.7% from the field, 40.6% beyond the arc, and 84.1% from the charity stripe. Outstanding numbers to say the least, but unfortuntaley from day one of this season, Smart has not given his superior PG the minutes he deserves and it has shown with his average minutes per game plummeting to 19:30 this season (with a couple of DNP-CD during the span). Evidently with such little playing time Thomas' stock has dropped considerably and has been putting up plus 200 value, yet it seems we have a happy ending to this tragic story. Over the past 2 weeks it seems that Smart is finally starting to learn that Brooks is not the answer and Thomas gives his team the best chance to win night in and night out. Thomas over the past two weeks has started to see 20+ minutes per game and in return has put up top 120 fantasy value, still not fantastic but definitely on the right track. Personally I believe that slowly but surely Thomas will begin to regian those minutes from inferior PG Aaron Brooks, and when he does the party will finally start. Maybe Smart gets fired and the process will happen a little quicker, but for now it's a slow but gradual pace. If you are an Aaron Brooks owner the time is especially now to cut the cord on that experiment and return to Thomas. Owners would be wise to jump on now before someone else grabs Thomas sooner and enjoys the top 80 numbers he can provide.
What can Brown do for you? |
Shooting Guard
Shannon Brown is firing on all cylinders |
It seems that there is finally some stability in Alvin Gentry's rotation, and Shannon Brown has benefited largely from it. Although Brown has been instilled as the starting SG since mid November, he hasn't started seeing 30+ until the month of December. Now that Gentry has finally cut out ineffective players like Wes Johnson and Michael Beasely entirely out of his rotation, plenty of minutes have freed up for Brown and he has certainly taken advantege of them. When you take a look at the numbers Brown has put up over the past 11 games, it's a shocker that he is still owned so very little in Yahoo leagues. In the month of December so far Brown has averaged a solid 33:30 mpg while putting up 15.0 ppg, 1.4 3PT, and 1.6 steals, while shooting 42.4% from the floor and 91.7% from the charity stripe, good enough for top 80 fantasy value. I mean there isn't much more of an argument I need to make, the numbers are there and he has produced them over an extended period of time. As long as Brown continues to receive starters' minutes I have no issue claiming that he will finish inside the top 90 in fantasy value. Owners would be wise to grab Brown immediately in favour of underwhelming shooting guards such as Randy Foye and Dorell Wright. Consider Brown a slightly lesser version of Marcus Thornton and enjoy the top 90 fantasy production from the Suns' scorer.
Small Forward
Matt Barnes (SF) Yahoo Ownership 24%
Let's go with a bit of a deeper league player and talk about Matt Barnes. The bad boy veteran has always been known as a solid defender and has had his share of suspensions and technical fouls. After making an intercity move from the Lakers to the Clippers, Barnes has seemed to have found some offensive game which is leading to solid fantasy production. Coming into the new year, Barnes is currently ranked as 61st best fantasy player this season so far, impressive to say the least. With the Clippers, Barnes has averaged a career high 25:30 mpg, 10.3 ppg, and 1.2 steals, while also averaging a solid 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 3PT. Along with the career high production Barnes is also shooting above his career average from the field (49.8%) and from the line (77.8%). It would be obvious to assume that regression will plague Barnes as the season resumes but I argue that his numbers will continue to hold due to three key reasons; Barnes is seeing career high minutes which has allowed for the increase in his fantasy production, he is playing in a system that encourages spread out offensive production not isolation, and he is playing alongside an elite PG in Chris Paul, who makes everyone around him better. In my opinion as long as Barnes remains a Clipper and he is seeing 25+ minutes there is no reason to think he can't put up top 70 fantasy production. Consider Barnes a slightly less version of Kawhi Leonard and add him in favour of other SF such as Tony Allen and Michael Beasley. If you need some cheap 3's and steals then Barnes is your man, go out and get him now.
Barnes is having a career year and it's time fantasy owners noticed |
With Big Baby down Gustavo is in for a bigger role |
Gustavo Ayon (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 9%
Time to start talking about some big men, and Gustavo Ayon is certainly a big man. Standing at 6'10" tall and weighing in at 250 pounds the Mexican sophomore has finally been given his time to shine. When Big Baby Davis went down with a serious shoulder injury many were wondering who would benefit from the freed up minutes, would there be a time share of some sort? Over the past 2 games since Davis went down, it's clear that there is no time share, and that Ayon is now the new starting PF to own in Orlando. Ayon played 27 minutes off the bench in the first game, then started and played 37 minutes in the second game, clearly he is ahead of Andrew Nicholson and Kyle O'Quinn in the rotation. In his last game as a starter Ayon put up numbers that will he will more or less continue to produce for as long as Davis is out. Ayon dropped 9 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists while shooting 50% from the field and the charity stripe. Ayon will also continue to be a a solid option for blocks and will help you a bit in steals as long as he is starting for the Magic. His free throw and turnover numbers will hurt you a bit, but if your looking for a solid rebounder who can block and score a little than Ayon is your man. A fantastic short term rental option I have no problem in grabbing Ayon in favour of power forwards such as Ersan Ilyasova and Kris Humphries. Go out and grab Ayon now before Davis returns from his injury (he is scheduled to be out up to 4 to 6 weeks) and enjoy the solid numbers from the Mexican native.
Centre
Amir Johnson (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 15%
Another week, another Raptor I'm fortunate enough to recommend. Last week Ed Davis was the flavour of the week, this time we have Amir Johnson. With severe injuries to both Andrea Bargnani and now to rookie centre Jonas Valanciunas frontcourt minutes have freed up in Toronto, and it has benefited Johnson immensely. Over the past two weeks (the length of time Bargnani has been out) Johnson has put up top 40 fantasy production averaging 8.0 ppg, 6.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 1.7 blocks while shooting 56.3% from the field and an incredible 92.3% from the charity stripe. The fantastic part about all this, is that he has put up these number while averaging just under 25:00 mpg, imagine what he can do with even more minutes. When Valanciunas went down early with his finger injury last game Johnson stepped right in and was given a fantastic 34:46 minutes, a trend that will surely continue with the Raptors thin frontcourt and Johnson's effective defense. Due to Johnson awesome percentages and solid peripheral stats he will soon become a hot commodity on everyone's waiver wire, jump on him now and beat the wave. Owners would be wise to pick up Johnson in favor of other centres such as Emeka Okafor and Elton Brand. Pick up Johnson now and enjoy the high level production from the underrated Raptor centre.
The gritty Raptor forward is getting starter minutes and is producing |
Keeper League Special
Andre Drummond (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 21%
It's the time of the year unfortunately when many owners need to take a realistic look at their rosters and see where they stand, do they have a shot at a championship or even the playoffs? If the answer is no, then it's time for keeper league owners to rock and reload and grab some players that can have an impact on their roster next year and for many more seasons to come. My favourite keeper league option by far has to be Detroit Pistons forward Andre Drummond. Selected in the first round with the 9th overall pick (one pick after Toronto reached for Terrence Ross, the story of the Raptors franchise) from Connecticut, Drummond was a high profile player coming out of college but was believed by many analysts to be more of a project than an instant force in the NBA. Well Drummond has proved many wrong and in limited time this year has shown that he is a star in the making and an absolute beast on the glass and an elite option for blocks. His free throw shooting reminds a major project (40%) but he has surprised many with his high FG% (55.9%) and his solid basketball sense. The only thing that is holding back Drummond from being an immediate fantasy impact is the coaching staff in Detroit who chooses to give Jason Maxiell minutes over him. If and when Drummond starts to receive higher minutes there is no doubt in my mind that he will become and elite frontcourt option for fantasy squads. Perhaps it might not happen this year (I do hope that it does) but there is no doubt in my mind that by next season Drummond will be starting alongside teammate Greg Monroe and the two will be dominating plenty of NBA frontcourts for years to come. Go out and grab Drummond now if you are in deeper leagues or keeper leagues and enjoy the immense amount of potential he provides.
Andre the giant will be putting up some mammoth numbers in the near future |
That's it for this week's edition of Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups, I leave you all with my misplay of the week. Since we talked about Gustavo Ayon, I found it obvious to post this hilarious video courtesy of the legend himself Will Ferrell. Enjoy and have a Merry Christmas everyone!!!
What do you think about dropping Dudley for Kawhi Leonard?
ReplyDeleteI'm ok with that move. Dudley is a streaky player, dont see him continuing this hot run of his.
DeleteThis is a HUGE trade and I am not sure what to think at this point. The more I look at it the more I am not sure.
ReplyDeleteI would send....
James Harden
Russell Westbrook
Blake Griffin
Lamarcus Aldridge
I would receive...
Lebron James
Rajon Rondo
Serge Ibaka
Kemba Walker
Thoughts? 8 team H2H 9 CAT league.
I'd stick with the guys you have. Does your team need some sort of MAJOR overhaul, are you not doing well? Small trades are expectable for getting your team to the next level, never have been a fan of swapping your entire lineup almost.
DeleteIts not that, but I did just trade Duncan and Josh Smith for Russell Westbrook and Ryan Anderson which really is not working out for me. I gained a lot in points, assists, and 3s, but lost in blocks and rebounds which I am trying to make up for.
DeleteThis is my team as it stands now.
PG: Westbrook, Parker, Felton, Rubio, Lowry (IR)
SG: Harden, Redick, Kmart, Jack, Eric Gordon(IR)
SF: DeRozen, Marion
PF: Ryan Anderson, Griffin, Aldridge
C: Hibbert, Koufos

ReplyDeleteShould I try to trade for Lillard and then pick up Kawhi/Craford? Who would you trade? H2H 8 team 9 categories
DeleteMy team:
Curry
Wade
Duncan
N. Batum
Ibaka
George Hill
Gortot
Hibbert
Irving
Parsons
AK47
Klay Thompson
Paul George
Team I am playing:
Lillard
Williams
T. Young
Melo
Joe Johnson
Faried
Joakim
David Lee
Zach Randolph
Rondo
Durant
Hickson
Knight
Also I need to bench two players for wednesday. I was thinking Hibbert and AK47.
DeleteThanks!
You might wanna bench your Indiana players, there game might be rescheduled do to severe weather. As for trading for Lilliard I think the most fair deal you can offer is Wade for him straight up.
Deletethanks that postponement tip really helped
DeleteWhen do you think is a good time to pick up john wall?
DeleteI heard that he is planning to return sometime in January but i'd wait on another report. His injury is very mysterious
DeleteI was offered to give up Serge Ibaka for Jeremy and Kevin Garnet. What do you think?
DeleteIm not the biggest fan of 1 for 2 deals when you have a solid lineup. Its deceiving and you have to take into account who you would drop.
DeleteHow about just hibbert for garnet?
DeleteGarnnet provides the better value due to his percentages but won't block like Hibbert does. If ur weak on blocks don't do this trade.
DeletePlanning to add Kawhi/Hayward or trade for Ginobili. Or should I stay put instead?
ReplyDelete10 team H2H 9 cat league;
MY ROSTER:
Melo
Westbrook
Duncan
Z-Bo
Faried
T. Parker
Turner
Walker
MWP
Pierce
Boozer
George Hill
Dudley
The trade I was offered: Faried for Ginobili. (Counter with Booz for Manu instead?)
And players I'm planning to drop for Kawhi/Hayward: Dudley/Boozer
Please help!
I wouldnt drop dudley or boozer for hayward. I can sign off on kawhi for dudley. As for that trade i'd stay far away from ginobli my friend. He is old and beat up and not getting as much run. His prime is long gone, Faried has much more upside.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about MWP-Turner for Anthony Davis-Robin Lopez? I did push through with the Manu-Booz trade btw. So I thought I lacked a center and MWP-Turner aren't very consistent.
DeleteI like the deal in concept, If you can get someone bettter than Lopez that would be great. But Davis is clearly the best player in the deal and you could really use him
DeleteLuckily, I was able to trade away Lopez and Dudley for Lowry and Gortat. Thoughts?
DeleteThat's an absolute steal, fantastic job!
DeleteI was the guy who asked about Hill for Conley on your message board post on Yahoo. Could you tell me what makes Conley a better fantasy option than Hill?
DeleteConley has more job security provides more assists and is an elite option for steals. Plus U don't know how Hills role will be once Granger returns.
DeleteOh btw, if I trade Hill, I actually won't have any SG's anymore except for Manu. The waiver wire does not have any quality SG's anymore. I have my eyes on Joe Johnson, JR Smith, Wes Matthews, and Klay Thompson. Or is Manu enough?
DeleteI have 5 PG's already, and since I have the Spurs Big 3, I'm worried that Pop will rest these guys. So I'm thinking about trading Parker maybe for a good quality SG/SF? Or maybe just Kemba/Lowry for a JR Smith/Joe Johnson type guy? What do you think?
DeletePop wont be resting Parker much but he will consider resting Ginobli and Duncan a little. Sure try and get yourself another SG but don't sell urself short just because off position scarcity. The trade u mentioned i wouldnt do.
DeleteHow about this one?
DeleteI will give: Duncan, (Kemba) and Randolph. And in return, I will get David Lee and Aldridge, and (Wes Matthews). The ones in the parentheses have yet to be finalized, but if it works out, do I push through with it?
Change of plans. The owner offered me Wade and Klay. And in return, I will give him Parker and Manu. Go for it?
DeleteAnyways, dude, I traded Parker-Duncan-Gortat for Wade-Lee-Chandler. How did I do?
DeleteThats a pretty big Hit on the boards and assists there. Not a fan of the deal because your taking a massive hit on blocks (Lee is a solid player but never blocks shots).
DeleteBoards? How do I lose in rebounds? Lee and Chandler are basically 10 reb/game kind of guys. I needed a SG, and he offered me Wade for Parker. And I also wanted to trade Duncan ('cause Pop will rest him). I know I lose blocks though, but that's fine with me.. Someone offered to give me Rondo for Chandler, and it's so hard to decide whether or not I should accept.. Oh btw, is having 2 SG-eligible players enough? (daily roster changes)
DeleteI forgot to mention that if I do get Rondo, he'll give me Paul George. So I'm not sure exactly what to do.. This is how my team looks like now:
DeletePG: Kemba, Westbrook, Lowry, Conley
SG: Wade, Manu
SF: Melo, Pierce
PF: A. Davis, D. Lee, Z. Randolph, Faried
C: Chandler
I'm thinking about just keeping Rondo instead maybe and getting Joe Johnson and giving Kyle Lowry. What do you think? Please help!
Ohyeah, someone is offering me Klay Thompson for Manu Ginobili. Seems like a good enough deal to me... Helps me in 3's and points, AND he plays more minutes.. Go for it?
DeleteOh my, Rondo tore his ACL... So now my plan is to trade Davis (or Chandler) and Lowry for M. Gasol and Kevin Martin. It's either that or Davis/Lowry for Jameer and Mayo. Thoughts on this?
DeleteI'm sorry for the many questions. I just appreciate your help! And I always feel like I need a 2nd opinion on things..
PG: Westbrook, Parker, Felton, Rubio, Lowry (IR)
ReplyDeleteSG: Harden, Redick, Kmart, Jack, Eric Gordon(IR)
SF: DeRozen, Marion
PF: Ryan Anderson, Griffin, Aldridge
C: Hibbert, Koufos
This being how my team stands right now, I am tied for first place, but just traded Tim Duncan and Josh Smith for Ryan Anderson and Russell Westbrook. Should I try to package Westbrook or Harden for a SF/PF and someone else? What do you think the best move is to improve my team?
You obviously need another C that can rebound not neccesarilly block shots and you can probably move either a guard or a sg for one. Zach Randolph is a player that comes to mind,
Deletedrop Mo williams in a 14 person league? could add Ilyasova, Hayward or Ayon?
ReplyDeleteFrom Kristian
If your not sitting in a high ranking in the league than im Ok for the move. But i'd still hold on to him if you can.
DeleteIn a 10-team, H2H league
ReplyDeleteThis is my team now:
Westbrook
Harden
Batum
Carmelo
Zach Randolph
Varajao
Ryan Anderson
Brook Lopez
D Rose
N Pekovic
C Parsons
DeRozan
Jordan Crawford
Should I trade Anderson for Monta Ellis?
Should I try to trade for Tim Duncan? If so, who should I trade?(I was thinking Varajao)
Is there anyone that you think I should target to help my team?
Lastly, what are your thoughts on Rose. Should I stash him or use him for trade value?
Thanks
I wouldn't look to trade for another big man unless you are trading for a guy who can block shots at a high rate. Larry Sanders is a guy i would target. Absolutely use Rose as trade bait if you can get top 90 value in return. I wouldn't go for ellis because you need a high assists guy not another scorer. A cheap guard that comes to mind is Greivis Vasquez.
DeleteThinking about these trades:
DeleteBatum for Jrue
Parsons for Ibaka
Crawford for Vasquez
Fair?
Parsons for Ibaka in a HEARTBEAT. Do that now!
DeleteWho would you rather stash at this point: D Rose or Danny Granger?
ReplyDeleteObviously cant stash both, but I was thinking about trading away Rose in a 2 for 1 to upgrade somewhere else, then pick up Granger to hold on to. Which guy do you think will have the biggest impact this year?
Thanks
It depends on your positioning. are u a shoe in for the playoffs. If so then i prefer stashing D Rose, there have been more encouraging reports on his rehab rather than Grangers. If ur struggling than go ahead and make a trade, no point in carrying dead weight
ReplyDeleteI'm in a 13 team H2H league and have the following roster
ReplyDeleteD-Will
Brandon Jennings
Goran Dragic
Greivis Vasquez
Ricky Rubio
Evan Turner
Andre Iguodala
MKG
Chandler Parsons
CJ Miles
Nikola Vucevic
Z-Bo
Roy Hibbert
I have a period of 3-4 weeks during which I'll be facing AFK teams. Since these are likely to be automatic wins, I was thinking about dropping Miles and picking up an injured player off the waiver wire. The choices I have are
Felton
Glen Davis
Andrew Bogut
Byron Mullens
Al Harrington
Who do you think I should pick up? I was debating between Big Baby and Bogut since my team could use more points and blocks and the rebounds couldnt hurt either. The issues are Bogut's questionable return and his performance when he finally does but Big Baby doesn't provide as many blocks as a healthy Bogut. Also, do you think I should drop Rubio and pick up Felton?
Firstly I'd hold on to Rubio and leave Felton. I would go with Big Baby here simply because his timetable is well known and he is nearing the end of it. Bogut status is so covered up and so up in the air I'm not ready to pounce on him yet, Big Baby is the answer here.
ReplyDeleteDynasty Keeper Roto League Trade:
ReplyDeleteI trade Lebron for Curry and Cousins.
Thoughts?
Here is current team:
DeleteJeff Teague
Andre Iguodala
Evan Turner
Arron Afflalo
J.J. Hickson
David West
Al Horford
DeAndre Jordan
Avery Bradley
LeBron James
Luis Scola
Jason Kidd
Dirk Nowitzki
Harrison Barnes
J.J. Redick
Wow dynasty league. Really tough deal there. Plus u need a big man for rebounds. This is a tough deal to pass up on. Curry's long term health is obviously concerning but he is a top player when healthy as he has proven this season. I like your side of the deal

DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI was offered to give up Ibaka for Joakim Noah, I am very solid on block so I thinks its a good deal, but joakim has been slumping lately so I don't know.
ReplyDeleteI dont think its that great of a deal. They are similiar players but Ibaka is better and having a career year. Plus he is more durable
DeleteShoulg I wait on the potential of this team or trade away the underacheivers
ReplyDeleteDeron Williams
Ty Lawson
Stephen Curry
Eric Gordon
Jordan Crawfod
Evan Turner
Tyreke Evans
Klay Thompson
Greg Monroe
Zach Randolph
Brook Lopez
Nikola Pekovic
Roy Hibbert
I'd wait on the potential but it may be time to move on from guys like Jordan Crawford. You could use another PG perhaps
DeleteTime to trade varajao?
ReplyDeleteIf you can get decent value for him go for it. Tough time to get a deal on him though
DeleteKyle Korver and Andray Blatche is on the waiver in my league.. who to add? would have to drop either Dion Waiters, Isaiah Thomas, Andre Miller or Bradley Beal? what would you do - and who to add/drop?.
ReplyDeletethanks Kristian
Ill sign off on dropping andre miller for Korver.
DeleteHi just wanted an general opinion on my team. I am doing well in my 8 team h2h league but just wanted to know if it could be better. Maybe some good trades I can make?
ReplyDeleteCurry
Wade
Duncan
N. Batum
Ibaka
George Hill
Gortat
Hibbert
Irving
Parsons
Rose
Klay Thompson
Paul George
Some free agents are: Asik, Nelson, Calderon, Varejao, Evans, Wallace, Crawford,Bynum, Dudley, Leonard, McGee
BTW I am stashing Rose because I am playing the 4 easiest team in a row and the are basically an auto win so I can just sit on him.
Thanks!
Wise choice on stashing Rose if you can hold on for the playoffs and plus you could use an extra PG.Your team looks stacked IMO, although Nelson is on a role on the wire and would be nice to have him on your squad.
DeleteWould you take Nelson over Hill? Hills role might also be negatively impacted by danny granger coming back.
DeleteAt this point I think I am a little more comfortable with Nelson rather than Hill. Both good options though
DeleteShould I pick up Bynum? Who would you drop?
DeleteMy team
Curry
Wade
Duncan
N. Batum
Ibaka
Nelson
Gortot
Hibbert
Irving
AK47
Rose
Klay Thompson
Paul George
Or Bogut?
DeleteBob, your opponents teams must be pretty horrible! How do you have such a stacked team?!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I was offered Lee, pierce and Lowry for wade and Monroe. Since I was going to drop Kmart to make room, I sent him too. Was this even?
I'm hoping that now with rondo gone, pierce is gonna step up and I'm hoping Lowry will get traded
Do you think Al Harrington is worth an add as a replacement for Glen Davis? Other options: Mullens, Beal, speights, Nicholson, Singler, Jeff green
ReplyDeleteMullens just got picked up so he's out of the pool
DeleteSo was speights
Delete
