Week 3: The Veteran Presence-Deep League Special

Hello everyone and welcome to another adition of Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups! The rules are plain and simple, I recommend five players (one for each starting NBA position) and they have to be owned in less than 50% of Yahoo leagues. If you have any questions or concerns about your fantasy team's trades and pickups feel free to ask me in the comment section. I regularly check the blog and am always happy to help.

Now time for the real material, let's see who caught my eye this week in the world of basketball.

Point Guard

Alexey Shved (PG,SG) Yahoo Ownership 18%

You may be wondering why I would begin my "Veteran Presence" article with a 23 year old rookie point guard from Russia. The fact is Alexey Shved made his pro basketball debut in Russia for CSKA Moscow at age 17!!!, showing the amount of pedigree and talent he possesses. After playing well overseas and leading the Russian national team to a bronze medal at the London Olympic games, Shved caught the eye of many NBA scouts and was finally signed by the Timberwolves this offseason. Coming into the year, this international man of mystery really had no role in the lineup, with the signings of Chase Budinger, Brandon Roy and fellow Russia teammate Andrei Kirilenko, the Timberwolves made it imperative to have a deep front court with the absence of Ricky Rubio. But things don't always go according to plan and Minnesota has been decimated by injuries  losing Roy and Budigner to knee surgeries, and J.J. Barea to a foot injury. Now playing time has seemingly opened up for the Russian and he has not disappointed so far in the limited minutes he has played. Due to his length (he measures in a 6 ft 6 in) Shved has put up some impressive defensive numbers when given 30+ minutes. In the past 9 games, when given 30+ minutes Alexey has averaged a very impressive 16.2   points, 1.2 blocks, 4.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.6 three pointer. Although his shooting percentage (.383%) and turnover rate (2.8) shows that he still has a lot of work to do in getting adjusted with the NBA speed and style, Shved has clearly shown to fantasy owners that when given time to run, he can produce at an impressive rate. Although the sample size is small, and the presence of Ridnour (not like he stays healthy for long) and the future return of Rubio may hinder Shveds ability to see floor time, I truly believe that his multi category potential has the ability to greatly assist fantasy owners now and in the future. Managers  would be wise to grab Shved now before it's too late in favour of players such as Jared Dudley and Mario Chalmers, he simply has much more upside.

Strong Buy (12-14 team plus)

Can the international man of mystery make a go of it in the NBA?

Shooting Guard
The three ball specialist is ready to roll

Daniel "Boobie" Gibson (PG,SG) Yahoo Ownership 12%

It's hard to believe but good old Boobie is playing his 7th season with the Cavs this year, and still at the ripe age of 26 years old. It's not a secret as to what Gibson calling card is, the man can flat out shoot the three ball. With a career 41.6 three point percentage it's obvious that Gibson is consistently a threat to hurt teams from downtown. Now the issue with Gibson is A) He never can stay healthy (only once has played more than 70 games in a season) and B) He rarely gets enough playing time to have a serious fantasy impact. Well with the unfortunate injury to superstar point guard Kyrie Irving it seems that Gibson's path to playing time has taken a turn for the better. With not many options to choose from in the front court, Byron Scott will probably be forced to deploy Gibson more than he has in the beginning of the season. When staying healthy and given court time, Gibson has averaged as a starter 11.6 ppg, 0.8 steals, and an impressive 2.3 3pt made per game. Although it's no guarantee that Gibson will become a starter with the 4 week absence of Irving I suspect that his minutes will climb to around 28 mpg, much better than his current 21 mpg and more than enough time for him to create and impact for owners. Managers who are in a pinch for some cheap three pointers, steals, and solid free throw percentages should look no further than Daniel Gibson as a short term loan. Think of him as a slightly better version of Kyle Korver and Jared Dudley and enjoy the short but fun ride while it lasts.

Moderate Buy (14 team plus)

Small Forward

Tayshaun Prince (SF,PF) Yahoo Ownership 30%

Now we've finally reached a real veteran in both age and career. The 31 year old Prince is now and 11 year NBA veteran and if there is one word I could use to describe his game, it would be "consistent". His career averages speak for themselves; 32 mpg, 12.9 ppg, 4.7 rebounds, 46% FG, and 0.7 3pt mpg, Tayshaun is the definition of deep league multi category fantasy player. He rarely puts up overwhelming numbers but never lets hurts you with terrible performances. The former Kansas product skinny figure and long reach translates into his ability to produce solid amounts across the defensive category board, from blocks (0.6) to steals (0.6). Although he no longer plays on the "Fab Five Pistons" Prince still is able to put up decent fantasy value across the board, averaging top 125 fantasy production. Yes the 2012 Pistons are a bad team, and some fans have been calling for a youth movement since the squad is not competing for anything significant, but Prince is at no risk to loose playing time simply because he is one of the only competent defensive players this team has. When you add up the fact that he is currently shooting a career best 55% from three point land its easy to see why owners can find Prince useful for their fantasy squads. Managers in need of consistent production across the board should look no further than Prince and would be wise to drop him in favour of underwhelming players such as Wilson Chandler and Trevor Ariza. Think of Prince as a slightly less version of Alonzo Gee and enjoy the consistent output.
The skinny Prince is still the king of consistency

Moderate Buy (12-14 team plus)

Power Forward

Jason Thompson (PF,C) Yahoo Ownership 44%

Let's get a little younger and little more upside and talk about the fantasy value Jason Thompson has surprisingly provided. I say surprisingly because coming into this season, no one had any idea how the playing time would pan out with the Kings' starting rotation.  With the presence of Demarcus Cousins and Chuck Hayes and the additions of rookie Thomas Robinson and James Johnson, it seemed impossible for Thompson to find anything above 25 minutes per game in this crowded back court. Yet as much as a carousel ride Keith Smart's starting rotation has become, shockingly Thompson has been one of the few players receiving consistent 30 minute playing time. After the first 10 games into the season Thompson has averaged 10.8 ppg, 7.2 rebounds, a career high 1.3 blocks, and in free throw percentage 76.5%. Now Thompson has put up these top 80 fantasy numbers while averaging a solid 30.11 minutes per game, something that is essential for him to take the next step from a fringe top 140 fantasy player, to a solid top 100 fantasy player. The former 12th overall pick has seen himself carve out a substantial and safe role in the Kings lineup, while Demarcus Cousins will always be locked into  the starting centre role, Thompson has so far been able to hold off the veteren (but offensively inept) Chuck Hayes, and has surprisingly not lost much playing time to the highly touted prospect Thomas Robinson. While an eventual loss of playing time to Robinson seems likely, (and logical because this team isn't going anywhere) as long as the mind numbing presence of Keith Smart is calling the shots for this club, Thompson should have no problem keeping up the production he has displayed so far. Owners would be wise to seek the talents of Thompson in favor of other under achieving players such as Ersan Ilyasova and Emeka Okafor and enjoy the likely top 100 production for the remainder of the season.

Solid Buy (12-14 team plus)

Like his game...love his sideburns

Centre

Brendan Haywood (C) Yahoo Ownership 8%

Now it's time for the real deep league veteran special, and who better to talk about then 13 season veteran centre Brendan Haywood. The 32 year old Tar Heel has been another model of mediocre consistency but in recent seasons his production has slipped beyond serviceable for even deep leaguers. After his 3 year tenure in Dallas ended (which was disastrous in both a basketball and fantasy perspective) deep league owners were intrigued with Haywood's signing with the lowly Charlotte Bobcats. Although for doubters it seemed as if Haywood did not have much gas left in the tank and would most likely continue to play in a reserve role, behind the likes of Bismack Biyombo and Byron Mullens.  Yet Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap has surprisingly decided to not move forward with the sophomore Biyombo and feels that Haywood provides the team with a better chance to win now. This decision has resulted in an Haywood starting and averaging 5 minutes more than his career average 23 mpg. With the extended court run, Haywood has averaged 7.2 ppg, 8.0 rebounds, 1.0 blocks, and 55.1 FG%, not spectacular numbers, but stats that can certainly be appreciated by deep league owners. Managers in shallow leagues and in need of a centre would be wise to acquire the services of Haywood as a short term investment (Bynum and Bogut owners im looking you), those in deeper leagues who are in need of rebounds and blocks would also be smart to go out and grab Haywood as a season long investment. Haywood is a low risk and medium reward commodity and owners should have no problem receiving solid defensive stats from the veteran centre.

Moderate Buy (14 team plus)

Deep leaguers should look no further than the veteran centre

That's it for this weeks edition of Three in the Key Fantasy Basketball Pickups, I leave you all with my misplay of the week. We've got Jeremy Lin not living up to the New York Linsanity like some owners hoped he would:

  2. Hey mate
Where is the weak link in my team and where can i improve??

    PG: Rondo, Sessions
    SG: Wade, Matthews, Jason Richardson
SF: Josh Smith, Gay, World Peace
    PF: Glen Davis, Garnett
    C: Howard, Gortat, Monroe

Keep in mind I'm the bottom of my league in 3 pointers which is why I brought in world peace and richardson

    1. It would be great to know how many categories your league plays with. It seems that you are set in rebounding and blocks with guys like Howard and Gortat, although you are probably loosing FT% every week and might as well just punt it when you own so many good bigs like this. I'd say the weak link in your team is that you don't have any assists guys outside of Rondo...Sessions is solid player and a great scorer but he only averages around 4.4 assists per game. Again it be great to know where you are getting beat week and where you are winning so far, but like i said FT and Assists seem the categories your team is struggling in. Perhaps trade a big for a higher caliber 3 point shooter (kevin martin is a guy I'd target) and then drop world peace or J-Rich for a high assists PG (if there is one on your waiver wire). Let me know if this helps.

      Delete
    2. Well speaking of Martin, I've been offered a Martin for josh smith swap. What do you think?
The league is rotisserie scoring with points, rebounds, blocks, assists, steals, free throw % and fg%

      Delete
    3. As much as I like Kevin Martin this year in that OKC offense, I think Josh Smith is just too good a player to give for him straight up. JS has gotten off to a slow start but he is starting to right the ship and I feel you're selling low here. Again it's only the first month and some players are still warming up and finding their shot and rhythm. Looks too me like you have a solid squad and perhaps trying to grab another PG would be your best bet.

    4. Thanks for the help. also, Bynum is a free agent. Should i pick him up or is it too soon? Oh and i dropped sessions for afflalo. Correct move?

      Delete
    5. And should i stick with richardson or pick up klay thompson?

      Delete
    6. And your opinions on these trades? Havnt offered yet, just my thoughts

Give up Josh Smith, Wade, Big Baby for Love and Mayo?

Give up Josh Smith, Wade, World Peace for Durant, Irving?

Give up Josh Smith, Wade, Matthews for Lebron, Walker and Noah?

      Delete
    7. I'd sit and wait on Bynum, he's situation is getting uglier by the week and there hasn't been any good news yet, this could be a season long thing. I love afflalo as a scorer and three point shooter, definitely the better player in that move, but you've got a plethora of three point shooters now. Richardson is just WAY to hot to drop right now even for a young guy like Thompson, if J-Rich starts to slow down then maybe make that move. Out of the three trades you just suggested, the best one for you would be the last one which you get Lebron, Noah and Kemba Walker i assume. Durant Irving second best, and Love and Mayo last.

      Delete
    8. But do they seem doable trades or am I way off?
I really want sessions back. Is there anyone I should drop for him?

      Delete
    9. Anonymous, I'd do the Smith, Wade, Mathews for Lebron Kemba and Noah deal for sure. GL!

  3. Hey, great blog.

I need some of your expertise. I'm currently 5th out of 10 team roto league, standard 9 cat.

    D. Williams, K. Lowry, D. Lillard, G. Vasquez,
    P. George, C. Parsons, A. Aminu, G. Wallace, D. Gallinari, A. Jefferson, D. Cousins, R. Anderson, O. Asik

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Also, CP3 and K. Love, are available for trade in the same team. Who do you think I should give up for them?

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the compliment. Im always happy to help. Looking at your squad it seems to me that you've got lots of talent and have had some injuries to big players (Wallace and Lowry) and some slow starters (Galinnari and Paul George). You seem set in Assists, steals, and amazingly solid in threes. Looks to me even though you have got some players that are a tad low in scoring, Asik, Aminu and Parsons on some nights, but these players are solid specific category contributors, if there is a higher scorer on the waiver wire i'd drop Aminu out of those three i named to grab him (but only if there is a real good scorer someone like Sessions). If you were able to make a trade for K love and Paul, which is fantastic I'd try and sell high on Lowry and throw jefferson in there. Try going a little conservative first and propose D Will or Lowry and Ryan Anderson (you wont need Anderson if you get K Love). And in all this is a great squad that still hasn't even met its full potential yet.

      Delete
    3. I originally drafted Ilyasova, then dropped him for Aminu, when do you think I should pick him back up? Also, Rubio is a FA, should I drop Aminu to get him and hope he gets healthy soon?

      Thanks for your help.

      Delete
    4. Ilyasova has been such a surprising major disappointing and depending on the size of your league and its waiver wire depth, he most likely belongs on the waiver wire now. I'd put him on your watch list and keep a close eye on him and see if he can string some solid games together (3 is a good number for me) then I'd think of picking him back up. He's just not seeing minutes and Scott Skiles is not consistent with his lineup, aka it's a fantasy nightmare. His numbers are just not serviceable at the moment, while Aminu's are. Last I checked on Rubio he still has no timetable to return but there is speculation that he is targeting a December return. I suspect the earliest he will be back is around Christmas, so it's too soon to grab him, and he's not really a big scorer (only 10 ppg) and your team doesn't need a low FG% and high assist guy.

  4. Hey mate
So I've got two possible trades going with two people

Give up wade for Randolph and j johnson
Give up j smith and big baby for lillard

So basically it's big baby, smith and wade and I get Randolph, Johnson n lillard. Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hmm this is interesting, I think your selling your players at too much of a discount. Both Smith and Wade are off to a cool starts and Smith has already shown signs of turning it around. I think the first deal is your best option, although I'm not a fan of j johnson, like Wade his better days are behind him. I think Gortat or Monroe for Liliard would be a better deal for you. Hope this helps, cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  6. would you guys do this trade?
Deron Williams and Paul Millsap for Kevin Love. I would be receiving Kevin Love. My pg's right now are Deron Williams, Kyrie Irving, Rajon Rondo and Damion Lillard. Would you guys do the trade considering I still have good pg's left even if I trade D Will?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I would definitely consider doing this trade. I would love to know what your big men situation is, and what categories you are struggling in specifically. This would help me determine a more conclusive decision.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Here's my team:
Lillard, Rondo, Derozan, D Will, Manu, Aldridge, Millsap, Kirilenko, Hibbert, Gasol, Wade, Matthews, Gordon, Davis, Kyrie Irving and Bosh (yes I know a lot of roster spots!)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Struggling in 3 pt, rebounds blocks and points because Gordon Kyrie Irving and Davis are all injured

    ReplyDelete
  10. Also if I make the trade would you drop Kirilenko and basically replace D Will with Rubio (when he gets back of course)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Rubio will be back in 2 weeks he was just cleared for full contact practice drills. I would make this trade and drop Eric Gordon (you should have dropped him long ago this guy never stays healthy) and pick up Rubio. So what your getting is Love and Rubio and losing Milsap and D will. So you wont take a big hit in assists with this deal but you will sky rockets in rebounding and 3s. Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thanks helped a lot took the deal. But wouldn't Erik Gordon help me in 3's as well when he gets back?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Gordon is a great player and would do wonder for your teams with for 3's. The problem is he never plays because of his bum knee and there is still no timetable on his return. The guy only played 9 games last year with the same injury and something tells me he just doesn't want to be in New Orleans. I just don't see him coming back anytime soon and would consider him dead weight for your team. Drop him and keep a close eye on him, if there is a good sign of him coming back soon pick him up if you want again.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Should I pick up John wall or is it too soon? I just don't want to miss out. Was waiting a while for Rubio and staudemire and just before I was gonna pick them up, someone else did.
    And what about bogut?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would grab John wall now depending on your team and playoff position, if your struggling then you might not have the luxury of waiting for Wall to get back. The last i checked the Wizards said he was getting closer to returning but there is still no timetable yet. But I wouldn't disagree in grabbing him now. Bogut on the other hand has been decimated by injuries for the past few seasons now and I'm taking the wait and see approach for him, it might be awhile before he sees 30 mins of game run.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've been offered Kaman and JJ Hickson for Hibbert and Tristan Thompson. Should I accept? Other than blocks Hibbert has been pretty disappointing. I'm currently leading that category so would probably be ok taking a hit there.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Absolutely take this trade, you will take a slight hit in blocks maybe but see a boost in FG%, rebounds and points. Tristan has not lived up to the hype and really isn't ownable. Great deal for you, take it fast.

      Delete
  17. So im in a 8 team rotisserie league and im the lowest in my league on free throw % by a long way and its really not moving up at all, mainly down to howard in my opinion.
So should i do a howard and Gortat/Big Baby deal for randolph and deng?
Im top in my league in blocks cause at the start i had ibaka, howard, gortat and josh smith. Ive given up Ibaka since but im still in quite a big lead. this was why ive included big baby instead of gortat so I still have gortat and Josh smith giving me blocks (although gortat doesnt produce any stats whatsoever recently) . So what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  18. If you feel that you can still maintain a good lead in blocks then i would suggest going with the Howard and Big Baby for randolph and deng deal. I believe Gortat has more upside than Davis and is too talented to not turn it around soon enough.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've been offered Marcin Gortat for Tyson Chandler. I'm in a 12 person h2h league with standard stats. My team consists of:

    Brandon Jennings
    Wesley Matthews
    Trevor Ariza
    Paul Pierce
    Luis Scola
    Danny Green
    Dwight Howard
    Tyson Chandler
    David West
    Thabo Sefolosha
    Andre Miller
    Jason Kidd
    Amar'e Stoudemire

Who do you think is going to have the better remaining season and who will help my team more?

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's a really tough call as to who will have a better season, Gortat has been up and down lately but i believe he has the more upside, especially in the point s and blocks department. But wether he will be able to consistently tap into that upside remains to be seen and Gentry is giving O'Neal way to many minites. I would stick to the much safer play here and just ride along with Chandler, he provides higher percentages and you probably dont need blocks since you own Howard.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I am thinking of dropping amare and I was wondering if I should pick up bargnani or jamison (both free agents)?
Also I was thinking of trading someone to get another point guard (more assists). Who do you think I should trade for and what would be a reasonable trade? Or should I pick up a point guard like Jameer Nelson or George Hill (both free agents)? Any other suggestions would be great.
    I am in a 8 owner h2h non-keeper league.
    This my team:
    Curry
    Wade
    Duncan
    N. Batum
    Ibaka
    Stoudemire
    Gortot
    Hibbert
    Irving
    Parsons
    Patterson
    Klay Thompson
    Paul George

Some more free agents are: Kidd-Gilchrist, Kidd, Richardson, Isaiah Thomas, Jared Dudley, Kirilenko, Glen Davis

    Replies
    1. I'd drop Stoudemire (who knows if he will ever be healthy and play at an elite level again) and go on and pick up jameer nelson (he offers more assists) if you wanted to trade for a point guard a buy low candiate right now is Ty Lawson, i fair trade for that would be like Hibbert for lawson, but you could try and steal him by offering Parsons or Patterson. This is a fantastic teama nd you should have no trouble doing well, one more high assits point guard will surely put you over the hump. Hope this helps.

      Delete
    2. Correction i prefer George Hill over Nelson. Had to go over the numbers again.

      Delete
    3. Why do you prefer Hill? He has had a terrible shooting percentage and not doing so well. What about Foye, Jason Terry, Williams, Collison?

      Delete
    4. Jameer Nelson is shooting worse than Hill and offensively he is not the focal point of the offense like Hill is with Indiana, this is why i prefer him more.

      Delete
    5. Ok I picked up, Hill. What do you think about picking up players that have been playing well and have been picked up by many owners like ben gordon or antwan jamison. Not these two specifically but hot players in general.

      Delete
    6. I think that its tough to judge wether or not these players will keep it up or wether they are having a mini hot streak. In the case of Jamison I like him as long as he is starting for Pau Gasol.

      Delete
    7. would you drop some one like patterson for him?

    8. Who do you want to drop?

      Delete
    9. wounld you drop patterson for jamison?

      Delete
    10. I'd wait to see how Patterson plays the next game then make the call

      Delete
    11. What about picking up Larry Sanders?

      Delete
    12. plays for the fantasy devil Scott Skilles which means inconsistent playing time. But has plenty of upside and offers an obscene amount of blocks.

      Delete
  22. How is this trade?
Give: JJ Redick, Lou Williams, Marcin Gortat
    Receive: Paul George, Danilo Gallinari

Free Agents: Alonzo Gee, Ersan Ilyasova, Daniel Gibson, Jeremy Pargo, Kyle Korver

12 team 13 Cat: FTM, FG%, FTM, FT%, 3PTM, PTS, OREB, DREB, REB, AST, STL, BLK, TO

    1. I like the deal for the receiving end, and would immediately pick up Gee after the deal is done. Although it depends on how weak your team is in block and rebounds, which will take a big hit with Gortat gone.

any potential trade u can think of? thanks

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think your rebound and blocks are solid, so solid that is is probably hindering your FT shooting and Turnover a lot. Plus you have been dealing with a large amount of injuries. This looks like an elite squad and the one thing i'd like to see you change is grabbing another PG that can shoot 3s. Ty lawson is a buy low candidate that comes to mind. Try offering Pekovic to ur frustrated Lawson owner as a buy low offer and see if he bites.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i actually just gave up holiday for batum, hope it won't bite me. lawson has picked up in last game, so i am not sure if the owner would accept the trade.
what about jeff teague for a high-volume 3-point shooter? who should i aim for? thanks

      Delete
  26. I'd to try and not trade Teague you need assists more than anything and you dont know how long it will take for Nash to get back. But if you can trade Teague Oj Mayo or Kevin Martin then go for it. Im not so found of the other 3 because they dont fit your needs.

  27. Awesome blog. You've pretty much been spot on with all of your analyses.

Who should I trade for Ty Lawson, Al Jefferson, and Ryan Anderson?

Trying to trade two PG's and someone else (e.g., Dwill or Rubio, Jennings or Vasquez, MKG) and get a sick deal for the extra scoring, more boards/blocks, and better %'s.

    My team:
    Deron Williams
    Goran Dragic
    Brandon Jennings
    Greivis Vasquez
    Ricky Rubio

    Andre Iguodala
    Chandler Parsons
    Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

He really wants parsons and I think he's riding off curry's recent 20/10 streak. The rest of his team looks like this:

    Mo Williams
    Javale McGee
    Shved
    Kobe
    Thad young
    Jameer Nelson
    Aminu
    Anthony Davis
    Jj hickson
    Jason Thompson
    Luol deng
    Al Jefferson
    Randy foye

    I have

    Love
    Curry
    Rubio
    Parsons
    Rondo
    Derrick Favors
    Kirilenko
    Lillard
    Vucevic
    Zach Randolph
    Lou Williams
    MKG
    Gary Neal

    3. Your holding on to some really worthless guys like baittier and Hawes and some weak options like Barnes. I would drop battier and Hawes for stuckey and McGee in a hearbeat. You need to win now so i would take that deal that was offered to you. You cant wait for Gasol to get healthy and maybe to turn it around.

    1. You need another PG so i would go with Jordan Crawford since AJ Price broke his hand. Drop Jamison for him.
